Slide shows are no longer Captive Torture

October 19th, 2006 · No Comments

There’s something about the holiday season that makes me want to view my photo albums.  Like many of you, I don’t go to the shelf anymore to dust off a photo album.  Most of our images are now digital and stored on one of our computers.  Even the old photos have been scanned to better preserve and organize them.

Inevitably I find a few photos that bring back fond memories and tend to bother my wife by interrupting her every few minutes with a “Hey, remember this?”  I group the slides into albums and add a few notes just like we used to write on the back of paper photos.  Now I can find a photo in a few minutes instead of looking through stacks of albums or giving up completely.

Maybe it’s curiosity or just human nature, but people like looking at other peoples photos.  The old cliché of whipping out the slide machine and screen, turning off the lights, and strapping your guests to the couch for an evening of captive torture is generally considered inappropriate party behavior.  On the other hand, showing your images as background entertainment is completely acceptable.

Given the proliferation of high-definition displays and the fact that many people hang these in their living room or kitchens, slideshows have resurfaced, but with a completely new look.  You don’t have to dim the lights or make a big production out of it.

Playing a slideshow from your PC, MAC Mini, XBOX 360, or even the display itself is just as entertaining as any TV show.  There are no commercials and you can easily rewind when everybody wants to appreciate the finer points of that photo your friend took of you on Cocktail Cove last summer.

Or, you can fast-forward.  Be sure to keep that remote handy!

Digital slideshows are fun and easy.  They make great “living art” displays, and can be accomplished in several ways with varying image quality and playback features.
