Completely eliminate “Wall Acne” with invisible light switches

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments

You research and purchase the exact granite counter top and matching custom tile backsplash for your dream kitchen.  The cabinet finish is impeccable.  The fixtures and appliances are stunning and functional.  The outlets are hidden from view, tucked under the cabinet.  Full spectrum under-cabinet lighting spotlights the effort and attention to detail of the materials used.

A bank of ugly light switches is cut right in the middle of the tiles (play record scratch sound here).

Huh?  All that attention to detail and a major compromise occurs when it comes to controlling all those lights needed to enhance your perfect designer kitchen.

DistinctAV to the rescue with three amazing products integrated together to form the perfect aesthetic and functional solution (add trumpeting “ta-da” sound here).

A lighting control system can reduce the common “Wall Acne” problem by controlling multiple lights in “Scenes”.  A few scene selection buttons can easily be placed within the space of a decora light switch.Example of Wall Acne. Lighting control system can reduce these to a one-or two- gang solution.

But what if you could completely eliminate the light switch on the wall?  How would you still make it intuitive to control?

If I asked 10 people what they do to turn on the lights when they walk into a dark room, they would all say the same thing: Swipe up the wall to find or hit the switch.

If we naturally swipe our hands up the wall, how about an invisible wall switch that senses your hand motion.  Get the idea?

Okay, so now we have a reliable light switch that works by sensing your hand motion near the wall.  How do we control the scenes so we have appropriate lighting for the time of day and sunlight level?

This is where the automation system comes in.  It senses your request to turn the lights on, checks a few readings like time and ambient light level, then turns on the lights to the pre-programmed levels.  All this happens within a quarter second so it’s incredibly functional.

Want to change the scene from the default for that time of day?  Simply swipe your hand up again and the next scene is selected.  Too bright?  Hold your hand in front of the sensor to dim or brighten the scene.

I don’t recommend these all over your home, but walking into your dining room or kitchen, waving your hand past the wall, and being gently illuminated is really impressive to any guest.
